Polyglot Secrets - Top 5 Motivation Strategies to Excel in Language Learning

Salut Les Amis! I finally have my workstation all set up which will now serve as a forever place for me to write my newsletter and create my music from and I am very excited to share all my updates with you!

This week I am going to share with you my top 5 tips to stay committed to learning a new language.

This piece comes as a direct result of my write-one-answer-on-Quora-each-day plan and if you would like to check out my answers to other questions, feel free to visit my profile linked here!

Finding out the one single thing which motivates you to learn the language everyday is the best way to stay committed to learning a new language.

I have discovered that the most amount of progress can be done if you do something every day for a short amount of time.

I developed a liking for the French language out of sheer curiosity particularly during those one off moments when you would experiment with a foreign language film.

Here are top 5 tips to incorporate learning French or any language of your choice, into an unmissable part of your daily routine and thereby making significant progress in writing and speaking over the course of time.

  1. Switch your default language on Netflix to French/Language of Choice - This transformed the platform into a fully immersive French learning experience for me. I began binge watching French language series instead of the usual passive watch comedy dramas that I was watching earlier.
  2. Listen to French podcasts - There are countless French/Language Learning podcasts on all major podcast listening platforms. A few that I use myself are Coffee Break French, French Bla-Bla, Little Talk in Slow French and Easy French. These podcasts pack bite sized lessons in grammar or spoken French into 15 minute episodes. This helps me consume the language at my own pace and at a time that is convenient for me through the day
  3. Get a learning buddy - To help with my spoken French, I put a notice at the Front Desk of my apartment building asking if anyone would like to meet me for an hour every week to help me with my conversational French. Soon I discovered that there were many more people interested in learning too and we put together a small language learning group. This helps gain confidence in speaking and learning with peers who are at the same level as yours will definitely instill confidence in improving and keeps you motivated to do better.
  4. Apps like Duolingo really help you keep your streak alive. Utilize the inbuilt reminders in those apps and make small bits of progress everyday.
  5. Enjoy the journey - Learning a new language is a skill with long learning curve. Be patient with yourself, give yourself some time to adapt to the grammar and really try to find beauty in the language by exposing yourself to as many forms of the language as possible.

In my case, my priorities lie with three main activities that I deeply enjoy. 1- Music- Music helps me be creative in the most surreal way. 2- Football - Playing football keeps me fit and takes away all the built up frustration and weariness in the day 3- Reading and Writing - Both these activities help me spend time with...

Salut Les Amis!
