A Delicate Balance: Navigating Work, Books and Social Life

Time is the most finite resource that we have. To use it for doing the activities that we enjoy the most is single handed lay the most rewarding feeling one can ever have.

In my case, my priorities lie with three main activities that I deeply enjoy.

1- Music- Music helps me be creative in the most surreal way.

2- Football - Playing football keeps me fit and takes away all the built up frustration and weariness in the day

3- Reading and Writing - Both these activities help me spend time with my deepest personal thoughts

The way I manage to do all three while also working full time is by time blocking and planning my whole week instead of every single day.

I read every day and practice playing the guitar everyday at least for 15 minutes. Over the course of 10 years of trying different lengths of time to do both these activities, I have realized that consistency is better than any amount of Herculean effort on one single day. You are also allowed off days but the more you try to stick to a routine of focused work in short bursts of time throughout the day, I find myself missing out on these far less than I thought.

Over time this consistency brings about a deep level of commitment to those activities and you rarely go a day without having done each of them.

In terms of activities that keep me fit, I schedule football games on days when I work remotely. This helps me keep a calm and open mind about work. As soon as I wake up, I also have this innate sense of excitement and I look forward to being on the pitch through the day. This excitement brings about a natural impetus to my work through the day, all my other chores and activities fall into place around this one core incidence of me wanting to play football.

I use google calendar to organize my days and I keep that calendar public. This also helps other people reach out to me at times when I am genuinely able to give them attention that they need at that moment.

Prioritizing is key and I also have an open and honest conversation with my wife about all these activities and how much they mean to me. This also ensures that we are on the same page, our chores are divided and she is also able to schedule her fun activities in this time. We both really appreciate this about each other and this is how I consistently manage time between college, reading and other activities.
